REGENTS PARK RAILINGS

The original railings and gates were designed by John Nash in the 1820s and formed part of his grand designs for the development of The Regents Park and Regents Street.  By the early 20th century the gates and railings were in a poor state and were removed and replaced with utilitarian versions.

The project involved the recreation of the cast-iron railings with stone bases around the perimeter of three sides of Park Square along with new entrance gates at Park Square East and Park Square West.

Original fragments survived which enabled new moulds to be made from which castings were taken.  Lanterns atop the new pier cages at the entrance gates were fabricated using early photographs as a guide. 

The project required intensive management to relocate existing underground services including gas, electricity, telephone and water which required strategic planning and co-ordination of the various utility companies in order to minimise disruption.

Works were completed in June 2002 and opened by HRH the Prince of Wales.
