Drawing on our extensive experience of traditional building techniques and materials we always seek to conserve and maintain the significant historic fabric of a building with minimal intervention; an approach that invariably goes hand-in-hand with sustainable design.
We believe that sustainability, both in the natural and built environments, and in social terms, is often best achieved by finding appropriate new uses for existing buildings. The practice has considerable experience in this field and has completed many projects for re-ordering and extending historic buildings in ways that are both complementary to the existing fabric and sympathetic to the architectural character of the original.
At the same time, the practice is committed to minimising the potentially deleterious effect of buildings on the natural environment, particularly in terms of carbon emissions and the embodied energy content of new construction materials. We can advise on the integration of energy-saving measures into buildings of all types and ages.
This broad approach to sustainability, grounded in a knowledge of historic buildings and traditional techniques, and combined with the ability to employ contemporary technologies, allows Caroe & Partners to offer a unique and tested approach to sustainability and its various interpretations.
