LLANTONY SECUNDA PRIORY
Llantony Secunda Priory is the site of a medieval priory of Augustinian Canons set in the heart of the industrial landscape of Gloucester Docks. It is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, Grade I and II listed.
Caroe & Partners was lead consultant for the redevelopment of two major buildings, both dating from the Fifteenth Century, the Medieval Range and the Brick Range.
The Medieval Range (with its Victorian addition) included a severely decayed timber frame as well as masonry elements. Traditional green oak framing and carpentry details along with breathable lime rendered infill panels have been used, to repair the external frame. Sensitive introduction of building services was a key challenge, to ensure this fine medieval building is fit for purpose as a twenty first century visitor centre.
The Brick Range reduced to a roofless ruin, but as one of the earliest brick structures in the country was consolidated to allow construction of a new roof. The building is now used as a lecture theatre and space for functions with catering facilities and WCs. Breathable insulation has been installed to the new slab and roof to ensure human comfort while protecting the historic fabric. The new roof was designed to spread its weight gently over brick walls and to accommodate undulations in the walls without rebuilding.
The site as a whole has been landscaped to improve accessibility for the disabled, enhance the environment for wildlife, provide a green space in the heart of Gloucestershire Docks and provide educational resources for visitors of all ages.
